Our 2 Cents: Valentines Day

Rachel:

I like presents.  There, I said it.  In my defense, I like giving presents as much as receiving them.  I also really like my husband.  So, a day set aside to trade gifts and focus on ‘us’ makes me happy.

Flowers, jewelry, a massage gift certificate, take your pick…any of the traditional type Valentines Day presents will do.  I usually head over to Dick’s Sporting Goods or Academy Sports and find something my husband can’t live without.  Some years when the budget has been tighter, homemade dinner and an evening together has been an excellent substitute for flowers and fishing poles.  In fact, spending quality time together is one of the things I like better than presents.

Some folks see Valentines day as a ‘fake’ holiday made popular by the greeting card companies.  That probably has some truth to it, but why not use it as an opportunity to let your special someone know how special they are to you.  (Cue the cheesy romantic comedy music!)

My husband and I have gotten even closer in the past 3 months since our son was born.  But that doesn’t mean we don’t need to treat each other extra special this Valentines Day!

Maggie:

Um, I’m sorry, is there something special going on this week??

That pretty much sums it up on the importance of Valentines Day in my life.  I enjoy it.  The red and pink and hearts are all girly and fun.  My husband and I kissed for the first time on Valentines Day.  But this year something my husband said about sums it up:

“I always think of it as a fun school thing where you decorate a shoe box, exchange Valentines and get candy.”  And mostly?  That’s what I remember about it too. (And now you are thinking: said the girl who never had a boyfriend on Valentines Day.  Somewhat correct.)

This year we had dinner at our favorite place earlier in the week.  Miri and I have to make a teacher appreciation gift + valentines to give away in class.  And that is it!  No box of chocolates, skip the flowers – but honey?  if you want to take the children on a daddy date so I can work on getting ready for the move, I’m all over it.

I know, I’m such a romantic.

Rachel here again…..How cute is it that Maggie and her husband’s first kiss was on Valentines Day?  Awwww 🙂
