When was the last time you got to go out on a date with your husband? For me it was last weekend and we had a fabulous time. We got a special treat from my parents who volunteered to keep wild child for the night. So we had an entire night to do whatever until whenever. That in itself is something to be celebrated. But what I was most excited about was not having to plan the date. Or even knowing the plan.
Earlier in the week David told me bits and pieces of what he was planning for Date Night. He wanted me to pick my favorite place to go for an appetizer and my favorite place to go for dessert! It could be anywhere in Atlanta. He was in charge of dinner. Fun, right? I was really excited all week and looked forward to the date!
Friday rolled around and it was a rough day for David at work. He got home around 8:00 pm and we were off for our hot date! We were STARVING! So our appetizer was a quick stop at Chick-fil-a for some waffle fries! (A big treat for me! Really, I can’t remember the last time I ate fries!) For dinner we ended up at the coolest pizza joint in Little Five Points. We lingered for hours sharing pizza and talking about our weeks.
Afterwards we window shopped up and down all the streets. I spotted the coolest vintage cowboy boots that I think are totally worth a trip back down there all on their own! My favorite part of the night happened then, when we were walking hand in hand up and down every street. Together. Oblivious to everything else we had going on in our hectic lives. Totally focused on each other. Not the world around us. You know those moments. The ones you never want to end. Unless you were promised dessert!
I googled every fabulous dessert place close to where we were, but nothing was open. We had gotten a really late start after all. Determined to end the night on a sugary note, I remembered something David and I did all the time in the college days. We would randomly drive by Krispy Kreme to see if the hot sign was on! (we only stopped if the light was on) So we went out in search of hot fried dough. And wouldn’t you know it, we found a Krispy Kreme. Beckoning to us in the night!
This date night was one I will remember for a long time to come. We really connected. We really had fun! We stepped out of our comfort zone and tried something adventurous. And I was reminded of how important it is to find that place where nothing else exists but you and the man you love. To take time to reconnect in the middle of our crazy lives. To take time for the little things. And always eat doughnuts when the hot sign is on!
