If you have ever thought about using cloth diaper this post is for you. There is a lot of information about cloth diapering out there. So much that it can be overwhelming. Here is a quick ‘How-To’. From curiosity to putting the diaper on your child, this is what you should do.
#1. Google cloth diapering. Check out a couple blog posts about different types of cloth diapers. Watch a couple videos about how to put the diapers on your kid. Find some cloth diapers for sale. Even peruse craigslist for some possible used options. Then when you are thoroughly cross eyed….
#2. Find a real live person that uses cloth diapers and ask them to tell you everything they know. This is the most important step. Seriously. I have not met a cloth diaper Mama that doesn’t like to talk about it. Actually, talk to at least 2 people that use cloth diapers. Have them show you a diaper. Talk to them about laundering the diapers, how many they have, what their routine looks like, what other supplies are needed, etc. They can help dispel some of the myths that surround cloth diapering. Take their information and digest it for a while. If you decide you’d like to give it a go, then…
#3. Decide which type of diapers you would like to use and pull the trigger*. Join a co-op, find a deal on Craigslist, or online. Include them in your baby registry. Buy your diapers and dive in! Then…
#4. Use your new cloth diapers. Feel free to pace yourself. With baby #2 my goal was to use cloth diapers 3 days a week while I got used to the routine of having 2 kids. Using a disposable once in a while (or more than that!) is A-ok!
*I currently use prefolds and covers. I have quite a few different types of covers that I got from different sources. I bought a couple here and there as my budget would allow. You don’t have to have 24 shiny, matching diapers to get started!
