Be a Santa to a Senior (BASTAS)

Be santa

When most of us think of giving at the holidays, we usually think about giving to children. There are amazing organizations that focus on this cause each year. However, there is a group that is often overlooked – senior citizens. There are many seniors that are without family or neglected by the family they do have. Some are lonely from being homebound, and many struggle financially without anyone ever knowing.  My husband learned about an amazing cause that supports this overlooked group of people by being part of the Coweta-Fayette Rotary Club. He put me in touch with fellow Rotarian Betty Keane.  Betty is the Community Educator for Home Instead Senior Care, and the event coordinator for BASTAS (Be a Santa to a Senior).  I had the honor of meeting with Betty at her house, which is also the headquarters of BASTAS. “These seniors are the forgotten generation,” she shared, “They will not ask for help.” I thought about this and was overcome with emotion as she shared several touching stories with me. One of the most moving stories was about a woman who asked for costume jewelry. While that does not seem like a surprising request for a gift, the story behind it took my breath away. The woman knew that she would be passing soon, and she had never owned a piece of jewelry in her life. She wanted to look pretty for her husband and her Lord when she went to Heaven.

Be santa bettyI was absolutely amazed as Betty showed me the inner workings of this incredible project. When we met, she was coordinating the distribution of the Christmas trees that were delivered to eight facilities (see the bottom of this article for the locations). There is a fine-tuned procedure for every step of this project, including a very comprehensive coding system that ensures privacy of the recipients. I commented on the project being a well-oiled machine and her husband Rich laughed and said, “She is the machine.” I certainly agree with that sentiment. I only wish there were more people like Betty in this world – her passion for this project got me so excited that I had to share it with you. This is the second year that the Peachtree City Home Instead Senior Care office has taken on this program. I have no doubt that it will be even more successful than last year!

So, I’m sure you are wondering how you can help. There are a few ways:

    1. Grab an ornament off a tree at one of the facilities listed below and bring the gift back with the ornament attached. They will only be collecting gifts until December 4th, so go NOW! (Note: The gifts must be unwrapped and must not be food items.) You can also find a location near you by searching on their website.
    2. Better yet, get any group you are involved with to participate – any group will do!
    3. Donate gift cards so that senior gift recipients can purchase items such as medication, specialty needs, food, etc. You may also make a monetary donation to help the cause.
    4. Help at the gift-wrapping party on Saturday, December 7th from 10am-4pm at “The Brick” at Heritage Christian Church – 2130 Redwine Rd Fayetteville, GA.
    5. To participate by volunteering your time and talent, you can contact Betty Keane at Betty.Keane@HomeInstead.com or 770-312-4791.

Let’s show this generation of amazing people that they are not forgotten. Please consider participating and be sure to share this information with your family and friends!
