Go Fly a Kite!

PicCollageI am always on the hunt for interesting things to do with my family, things that are out of the ordinary and sure to provide memories to cherish.  Atlanta is such a beautiful city with a rich history and it never fails that she provides great opportunities for families if you just look hard enough!  One of those unique events is coming up Saturday, October 25 in Piedmont Park.

I do not know about you but when I think of kites, I think of Spring time!  A cool breeze and a sunny afternoon is the perfect combination for kite flying!  I have never even considered Fall as kite flying weather; although, it makes perfect sense!

The 3rd annual Atlanta World Kite Festival and Expo will be held Saturday, October 25 at Piedmont Park in the Meadow from 1 to 6.   The Atlanta World Kite Festival and Expo began its mission back in 2012 to create a family centered event focused on kite flying.   The 4th Saturday of every October, the organizers have provided a fun atmosphere for not just kite flying; but also live entertainment.  New this year, they will introduce the Inaugural Kite Making Contest.  The contest is open to anyone that has a love for kites!  There will be two age groups:  youth and adult.  Are you interested in finding out more, check out their website here.

Here are some interesting facts from the National Kite Month website:

The earliest written account of kite flying was about 200 B.C. when the Chinese General Han Hsin of the Han Dynasty flew a kite over the walls of a city he was attacking to measure how far his army would have to tunnel to reach past the defenses.

Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Graham Bell, and the Wright Brothers are a few people who flew kites that changed history!

Kite events date back to 1749 when Alexander Wilson flew a kite to record air temperatures at different altitudes.

This event is free to the public and is sure to provide lots of entertainment for all.  Featuring not only kites; but also there will be plenty live entertainment to enjoy including The Braves BAT Team,  performances by the world-renowned classical Chinese dance and music show- Shen Yun 2015, SenoritAwesome, The InStep Step Team, and many more.

Please consider registering to attend.  They have set up an EventBrite page.
